Hosting means the computer files which make up your web site -- including email files,
text, graphics, navigation scheme and technical elements (more files than
you can imagine!) -- are physically located on
and served by a web server (computer). So hosting is like 'renting' space
and resources for your files, on
that server. Your hosting fee ('rent') pays for the space as well as the
upkeep and maintenance of the server -- hardware and software upgrades,
backups, electricity, labor, smooth operation of your web-site-related email
boxes, etc.
